GCSE Results Day for 2016 is almost upon us and thousands of pupils across Yorkshire will be waiting nervously for their exam results. What follows, we hope, is celebration and then the thoughts of what to do next. For many the choice will be to return to sixth form and embark on the A Level courses, others will leave school and turn to college but for many, the choice will be an apprenticeship.
Can I really do an apprenticeship after GCSEs?
Over the years that we have been delivering apprenticeships we have had numerous GCSE school leavers start an apprenticeship instead of doing A Levels or a college course. We were recently visited by an ex apprentice who had left school at 16, joined an IT company in York and developed his skills in IT support. He came to visit us as he was about to move to Cornwall where at the age of just 19 he was starting his £28,000 per year and company car job heading up IT support for a large employer. We just love to hear success stories!
Starting an apprentice as a GCSE school leaver is a critical decision. You have to really, really want to become an apprentice and start your chosen career. You have to be passionate about what you want to do. We had another GCSE school leaver that wanted to work in web design. He had already taught himself some code in his spare time and we found him a position with a fantastic eCommerce design agency. The apprentice completed his programme but also became one of, if not the youngest Magento certified developer in the country.
What apprenticeships can I do?
You can apply for any of the apprenticeships that we are advertising. Take time to read the job details and make sure that it is something you really want to do before you apply. Make sure you have a CV – it doesn’t need to be very lengthy but it should contain your GCSE results, a bit about you, any sports, interests and achievements and any jobs or work experience you might have had. Don’t worry if you haven’t had a job before, employers won’t expect this as you have just left school – just make sure you are passionate about the career you want to go into.
